A day at camp

Your day runs on the sun.

The animals keep early hours, so we do too. Here is a typical day in the dry season. Every part of it is optional except the sundowner.

  1. Tea at the tent

A soft knock, a tray of coffee or chai and ginger biscuits, and the lantern left on the veranda. Outside it is still blue; the lions are still calling.

Canvas tent interior at first light
  2. The dawn drive

Out with your guide as the sun clears the horizon, when cats are still hunting and the light turns the grass to copper. Blankets and hot-water bottles in the vehicle.

A guide scans the plains with binoculars from an open safari vehicle at sunrise
  3. Bush breakfast

A table under an acacia or on the deck, laid with linen, fruit, eggs to order and Tanzanian coffee. The zebra usually keep their distance. Usually.

A flat-topped acacia on the open plains, where breakfast is laid on clear mornings
  4. Lunch, then the quiet hours

Salads from the camp garden, fresh bread, something cold. The heat sends the animals into the shade, and you to the daybed, the bath or a book.

A canvas tent and its veranda chairs in the shade of tall trees
  5. The afternoon drive

Elephants walking to the Moru waterholes, cheetah up on termite mounds, giraffe in the long light. Your guide reads the day and picks the route.

  6. Sundowner on the kopje

A short climb, a cool box, a gin and tonic or a cold Kilimanjaro, and the sun dropping behind the granite. The best seat in the Serengeti is free.

Granite kopje boulders silhouetted against an orange Serengeti sunset
  7. Fireside dinner

Drinks round the fire, then three courses at one long table or a private one on your deck. An askari walks you home with a torch. The stars do the rest.

How we keep the camp light

Commitments, with numbers attached.

A camp in a national park is a guest too. These are the promises we hold ourselves to, and we publish how we did each year.

36kWp

Solar, day and night

A 36 kWp array and battery bank run lights, fridges, pumps and charging. The backup generator is for emergencies only, and every hour it runs is logged.

120L

Water budget per guest

Water comes by bowser from a licensed borehole, is filtered on site and served in steel bottles. Grey water runs through a reed bed, never onto the plains.

80%

Team from nearby districts

Our hiring target for Serengeti and Ngorongoro districts. We pay for guide certification, and two places a year go to young women from neighbouring villages.

$15

Per guest, per night

Goes to a school and water fund run with the village councils, outside the room rate. The yearly accounts go out to every past guest.

0m³

Concrete in the ground

Every tent stands on a removable timber deck. If the camp ever leaves, the grass under it grows back in one rainy season.

2vehicles

Per sighting, at most

Our guides call off a sighting rather than crowd it, keep to the tracks and turn engines off. Animals first, photographs second.
